Appreciate LIFE

Recently we decided to give our puppy up to another family.  This decision wasn’t made lightly and was most certainly difficult.  Where I knew it was the right thing to do because three large dogs is just too much for our household, it was so painful.  Luckily she went to a very nice family that is extremely happy to have her in their home.  She will be the center of attention – she deserves that and more.

What this made me think about (mostly because I spent so much time crying) was, What should I learn from this?  How is God trying to teach me something here?  Interestingly I have a new appreciation for many things.  My dogs I have, my kids, my hubby – lots of stuff.  How often do we sigh because we have to do something we don’t want to? Or grumble because there are more dishes to do? Or get irritated when the dog isn’t cooperating?

Wouldn’t it be better to think…

I’m glad I have to pick up this because that means my house is lived in and the people here feel comfortable to be themselves.
I am glad we have dishes to do because that means we have full tummy’s and aren’t worried about where our next meal is coming from.
Look at how much joy this dog has in just being with me.  Shouldn’t I try and emulate that in life with others?

Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we just really tried to appreciate what we have?  Next time you feel yourself getting upset over the small stuff, try really hard to see what you should be appreciating.  Life truely is short.  Live it fully and with love.

Birthday Fun

Birthday’s are fun.

BMW’s are fun.

Birthday’s with BMW cakes have got to be fun, right?

When Kyleigh and I started brainstorming on what kind of cake to make Kyle, we were all over the board.  We were just excited to be decorating any cake.  Then we started thinking about what he liked and BMW’s topped the list.  We first thought about making a cake look like a car.  Well that idea soon passed because we were pretty confident the end result would not be a sleek, cool looking car.  The emblem seemed more achievable!

Baking the cakes was a bit of a challenge in itself.  From too much batter in the pans, cakes sticking in pans, being in a hurry and not wanting to wait for them to cool….we pretty much hit them all.  In the end, it isn’t about delivering a perfect cake.  It’s about giving a cake that expresses that you care about the person so much you will stay up to all hours of the night baking, icing, rolling fondant amd squeezing out mini frosting stars until your hand doesn’t work.  Yep, we love our guy that much!!

How do you meal plan?

I enjoy meal planning for the benefits.  Cost savings, time savings & general worry savings (what oh what do I make for dinner tonight…take out pizza?). For the last few weeks I have been super diligent planning my meals (truth time – it’s because I am doing Weight Watchers and I do much better when I plan 🙂 ). Planning usually takes me about 45 minutes.  This is usually because I am digging through recipes and thinking about what sounds good, what is good for us, what is in season & what do I really have time to make.

I found a new service that has potential to be pretty amazing. It is called e-mealz. For only $1.25 per week they give you a meal plan for the week complete with shopping and pantry guide. How awesome is that? They plan 7 meals a week for you.  This is good because I probably won’t love one or two of them.  I have found that between leftovers and the occasional dinner out, planning 5 meals is perfect. This is the first week I have subscribed to it (you buy 3 month subscriptions for $15) and I have to tell you , I am very excited about it.  I crossed the stuff off of the grocery list I don’t need and added a couple extras and I was off to the store!  What a time savings!  I tried a couple of their recipes last week and they were very good.

Here’s to home cooked meals and less stress!

Baking a caterpillar?

Today I had the day off.  Perfect.  Loads of laundry, many square feet of flooring that should be vacuumed, not to mention clutter pretty much everywhere.

Everything started pretty innocent. Made some coffee and relaxed reading a few of my favorite blogs. Well Bakerella inspired me (nothing new here, she is amazing). So instead of being a responsible adult I decided to bake SOMETHING. I decided that the “something” needed to be chocolate regardless of the diet I am on. Then I thought about the fondant in the cupboard.  What oh what can I make with that fun substance.  Flowers! Flowers are perfect for fondant. I baked the cakes in small torte pans and a round pan, thinking I would make cute flowers.

This changed when said cake would not come out of the pans nicely! Kyleigh came up with a fun idea of a caterpillar and no more encouragement was needed!

What a fun little fella. He needed a leaf to cozy up to so that one is mainly frosting with a little fondant.

Needless to say, it was nummy. Glad I did this rather than all my laundry.  🙂
